Less-Than-Comprehensive Devaronese Dictionary [WIP]

While I was researching Devaronians (y’know, like I always am), I noticed the Wookieepedia article on the Devaronese language is pretty sparse—so sparse, in fact, that it doesn’t actually contain any Devaronese words. SO, despite me being less than a linguist, I decided to try and come up with some of my own!

Basically, I extrapolated what I could from what few Devaronese words we know (all of which are italicized on the list itself, just for reference), while with others I and Nick (@of-stardust-and-wanderlust) gave meanings to our OCs’ names—the rest I basically just pulled out of my ass derived from the other words. This is of course an ongoing, ever-expanding list, and I’d be happy to add more to it if anyone has any ideas!

For now though, feel free to read through this, leave comments about what you find interesting, bash me for my misunderstanding of how languages work, or anything else! I’d love to hear your guys’ feedback on this 😀

Reblogging cuz I (and some pals in the Devaron’s Angels group chat) made some additions to the dictionary 😀

Less-Than-Comprehensive Devaronese Dictionary [WIP]

So I’m thinking about making a Kel Dor character soon who, instead of the traditional face mask and tiny goggles, wears a big Buzz Lightyear-style spacesuit. I don’t have any reason for doing this other than it being a neat aesthetic, but I was wondering, what do you think would be the effects of wearing something like that? Do you think it would work better/make more sense than the face mask?

There’s no reason it couldn’t work at least decently, given the basic functions of the mask and goggles Kel Dor normally wear offworld. The suit would have to be completely airtight and filled with the composite gases of Dorin’s atmosphere, including helium. There would have to be some sort of amplifier inside the suit, because otherwise the Kel Dor would be forced to shout to be heard. The issue would then be that a suit of this nature would likely be pretty bulky and heavy. If the air is going to be contained inside a suit rather than a mask, then every part of the body has to remain covered at all times, which means no touchscreens or fingerprint scans, and likely very little fine motor control. Practically, it definitely would not make more sense than the standard mask and goggles, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Perhaps the suit was chosen over the mask for a specific reason, like cost or a disability?

I hope that helps!

This is gonna sound weird but I just watched annihilation and they said that species can’t cross-breed so, uh, given what we know from rebels and barring further embarrassment on my part, how does Jacen Syndulla exist?

It’s a well-established fact in the Star Wars universe that some species can cross-breed and others can’t. Generally, two humanoid species will be compatible, and Twi’lek/human hybrids have been seen before. Other than that, the specific biological implications are not fully explained.

Do you know of any specific species/planets that would’ve had a high number of refugees in the aftermath of the galactic civil war? I wanna have a character of mine adopt an orphaned kiddo, but I can’t decide on where they should be from.

Any planet that was particularly involved in the fighting would be a reasonable choice; many of them suffered some sort of attack that could force people offworld. Jedha, for example, could work. Caamas would be a good one, as many Caamasi were displaced by a planetary bombardment in 19 BBY, and Corulag (in canon) was in a similar situation. Refugees were known to flee Kashyyk during the Civil War, as well as Wobani (though some of them went to live on Alderaan and were likely killed before the end of the war), and Denon and Ryloth would also be likely candidates.

I hope that helps! If anyone can think of others feel free to add on!

Is it ever stated why Mitialans (namely Bariss Offee and Luminara Unduli) cover their hair most of the time? If not, do you have any theories?

It’s never specifically addressed. However, fans have speculated that it may either serve a religious purpose, like many real-life hair coverings, or it may have something to do with the fact that they are Jedi. Very few Mirialans do cover their hair (Barriss and Luminara are some of the only ones we’ve seen), and since Mirial is a very religious society with a distinct caste system it could be that Mirialan Jedi are seen as a sort of priest to other Mirialans and thus may have special dress customs. Additionally, the coverings may be to protect or hide the extrasensory organs that Mirialans have on their heads, which would especially benefit Mirialan Jedi because of how noisy and crowded Coruscant is. (This may also explain why we see Barriss with her covering off in her quarters.)

Hope that helps!

hi! do you know anything about the (culture of) governance in hutt space? would the planets be ruled directly by the hutts or through local government proxies, if the hutts are even involved to that degree (i’m not sure)? what do you think there is in terms of a police/military presence and a tax system? thanks in advance!

Hutt Space was governed by the most powerful and corrupt of the Hutt clans, or Kajidics, and their criminal networks, who were in turn overseen by the Hutt Ruling Council. The Kajidics were basically crime and/or business syndicates run by Hutt families, usually involved in many different ventures and often possessing leadership over dozens of worlds. Many clans were in constant competition with each other, but their rivalries were generally reigned in by the Hutt Ruling Council. (It was also common for Hutts to operate as lone crime lords, and some, such as Jabba, ruled whole planets by themselves.)

It is unclear exactly how involved in the system the Hutts themselves were (it likely varied from world to world) but it seems to be that the prominent members of each clan had an involved role in guarding and ruling their territory. If a world was not governed directly by a Hutt (and this did happen), it would be overseen by agents of the clan in some capacity. Often, we see the dirty work carried out by vassals of different species, such as the Gamorreans, and the Hutts’ criminal networks. Hutt Space was known as a lawless place, and as such there was no organized region-wide police or military force, and likely no official tax system either, although it’s entirely possible there was an informal system of protection bribes in place. If the Hutts saw something they didn’t like, they could send bounty hunters to deal with the problem; this would be the closest thing to enforced law in the area.

I hope that helps!

Hi again! I’m writing a story about cad bane and I just had two questions about Duros biology that i couldn’t figure out. 1: are duros warm blooded or cold blooded or somewhere in the middle? I have him go to a snowy planet similar to hoth or orto plutonium and I was just wondering if the cold temperatures would give him more trouble that usual. That was all. Have a wonderful day! :D

It’s never specifically said (sorry!) but since Duros are distant descendants of reptiles, it’s more likely that they are cold-blooded. If you choose to interpret him this way, then he would have trouble with a cold planet, yes. (Also I can’t help but notice that that was just one question? Was there another part?)

Hope that helps!
