@Fic Writers!

If anyone’s writing a Star Wars fic and wants to know the other species in the galaxy to populate the background of your fic, THIS is a good visual guide to use. It’s one long, alphabetized list with a picture of each species and where they’re seen in the movies or other EU material.

It does NOT include any other details or history about the species, so for more in-depth information, Wookiepedia is still your best bet. I use that as well, but since I only wanted a quick glance at what the many sentients look like and where they’re from, this list was more helpful than opening 12 new tabs.

@vadianna this seems like something you should know about.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

This is HOLY COW incredibly useful. The information is slightly out-of-date, and doesn’t seem to include the stuff from Rebels or TCW (has no Lasat, and no Togruta), but it’s a great reference regardless.

Tagging @writebetterstarwars, and I suppose @pep-no as well; trying to think of people who would want to see this, that don’t follow me.

Reblogging for anyone who needs this!

I read Catalyst about a month ago so my details might be a little shakey, but the basics are that the Jedi very tightly controlled kyber crystals and their sources until Order 66. The Tarkin Initiative is secretly started during the Clone Wars (after they get the Death Star plans from Geonosis). I can’t remember exactly when Galen starts working for Krennic under the false “clean energy” program, but it’s after the Empire takes over. (1/2)

The first kybers Galen’s given to work with are cut/finished, implied to be from Jedi lightsabers, or from their temples. I can’t speak to when Jedha began to be mined, but it’s not mentioned in Catalyst at all. It might be in the Rogue One Visual Dictionary (I read that even longer ago and there are good sections on Jedha and the building process of the Death Star). (2/2)

Thank you! @maptowhereialreadyam, take a look at this as well

Bumper SW References List!

Vocab List is Up!

For those who don’t know, I’ve been working on a list of star wars vocabulary to be used as reference. It’s finally ready to go, and you can find it here.

It’s also linked in my navigation tab, and in my bio (for those on mobile). Use it whenever you want, and don’t be afraid to suggest that something be added. Thanks to everyone who has already either suggested stuff or sent in asks about terminology! I hope you all find this useful.

Good luck to everybody with their writing!

tips for writing Star Wars fanfic/Star Wars roleplay things

  • it’s not concrete; it’s duracrete
  • viewports are the windows on ships
  • not a plane; ship or speeder
  • it’s not steel; it’s durasteel
  • books are rare; holorecords or datapads
  • it’s not a glass pane it’s transparisteel
  • caf is the equivalent of coffee
  • it’s not paper it’s a flimsi
  • medcenter is a hospital

Star Wars can be very similar to things we’re already used to, but getting familiar with some of these terms can make your writing really fit in with the universe

This is brilliant!  Here’s another:

It’s not a movie; it’s a holovid

It’s not a phone or cell; it’s a holocom or communicator or just comm (unit).  You normally comm someone instead of call them.

Searching our standard terms in Wookieepedia will normally provide you with one or several in-universe alternatives.  The other items exist, they’re just either archaic terms or really low-tech versions of what’s commonly used (like concrete is a real thing, but just extremely less durable and strong than the more advanced and common duracrete).

I’ve seen ‘permacrete’ used in the latest books as well.

Back in the day weren’t the “glass” windows on x-wings and ships called like invisa-steel or something? That stuck in my head from the Thrawn trilogy I think. I remember sitting there in deep contemplation over how the hell you make the molecule chains in metal transparent and worrying about carbon chains and shit because what’s what you do in 10th grade.

I remember seeing med center used as medbay and sickbay as well, and dishwasher as sonic dishwasher? (correct me if wrong tho, I can’t remember v well). But here’s some more:

bandaids = bacta patches
bathroom = refresher
watch/clock = chrono
first aid kit = medpack, medkit
motorcycle = speeder bike, swoop bike
camera = holocamera
internet = holonet
shower = sonic shower(?)

Correct any of these if they’re wrong ;P also they’re all legends I think and I’m not sure if any of them are in new canon.

I love this, because it’s not condescending or pretentious…just fans letting newer fans know ways to improve their fic. I love the films, but I haven’t been able to get access to so many of the books and comics yet (even though they’re waiting in my Amazon cart for pay day), so this is awesome. And I’ve basically been living on Wookieepedia lately, too!

I can’t find a canon instance of it but

refrigerator = conservator

I just know I’ll be needing some of those in the future.

@writebetterstarwars maybe add those to your list?

Thanks @pomrania! In the meantime, I’m sure you guys could use this list.

What are some general things that the galactic senate does? Is there a galactic budget that has to be passed? Do they handle treaties or sentient rights? Do they mostly just drink coffee and argue? Any big crises when Bail was a young senator?

The Galactic Senate’s main job is to settle disputes between worlds or organizations, handle treaties and governing laws of the Republic, allocate resources and money among the citizens and manage defence forces.

They do take care of sentient rights (through the Rights of Sentience clause in the Galactic Constitution) and all treaties between planets that are part of the Republic. A lot of things are taken care of in smaller committees and subcommittees, unless, of course, it’s a matter that concerns the Republic as a whole.

The Republic’s budget is overseen by the Financial Committee. One of the only known members of this committee happens to be Bail Organa. The Allocations Committee also oversees the budget, namely the parts relating to taxation and government revenue. The Financial Appropriations Committee supervises grants from the Republic to charities, organizations and projects, and also has a stake in the final budget. It is unknown exactly how these committees operate, but it is reasonable to assume that the budget must be passed by at least two separate bodies, one of them possibly being the Senate.

The only major event I can think of that happened early in Bail’s career would be the Invasion of Naboo and subsequent Vote of No Confidence in Chancellor Valorum. Even though he wasn’t yet a Senator, Bail spoke at the meeting where the vote was held. After Palpatine was made Chancellor and Bail Antilles resigned, Bail Organa took his place in the Senate.

And yes, a lot of the Senate meetings were primarily arguing and drinking coffee, or as it’s known in-universe, caf. It takes a lot to get over 2000 Senators to agree on anything.

I hope that’s helpful. Good luck with your story!

Star Wars – The Unknown Regions (2010)

Interesting notes:   While no longer canon

(as of April 25, 2014), this RPG supplement guide can be useful for helping to provide more background for this area of space.  Currently, the only planets we know of that are canon for this region are Rakata Prime and Ilum, but it’s also where the ice planet used for Starkiller Base was from.

Potentially useful for:   If you want some neighboring planets for the First Order to interact with, these might be of use!

Wookieepidia Links:
244Core + Altiria/Anarris + Durace
Giaca + Iol + O’reen + Veroleem + Volik +

These are words I’ve either had to look up for myself, or saw them written wrong in fics that otherwise had decent spelling. Directly copy-pasted from the file I keep for myself. Heavily weighted towards SWR terms, as that’s the fandom (sub-fandom?) I write in for the most part.

capitalized: Jedi, Sith, Rebellion (some contexts), Outer Rim, Padawan

lower-case: holocron, stormtrooper, dark side

unknown capitalization: various race names; the word for “referring to the Empire”; master (when used to refer to a Jedi’s relation; such as, what Obi-wan was to Anakin)

planets: Malachor, Mustafar, Atollon, Dathomir, Jedha, Mandalore, Ryloth, Lira San

names: Zeb’s last name (Orrelios), the Bendu

not sure how to spell: crystal in the lightsaber (kyber), alphabet (Aurebesh), that one fruit (meiloorun)

other stuff: “datapad” is one word, TIE fighter, medbay (one word), clone trooper (two words, no caps), comlink

other stuff I need to look up: Zeb’s weapon-thing, communication device, caffeine beverage

Thank you for sending this! I’ll get these added to the list

If a character is giving written stuff to somebody else (with no expectation of getting it back), would it be on a datapad or a flimsi? What’s the plural form of that latter word, anyways? What’s the primary method of personal data storage? What form would “books” be in?

For your first question, it’ll depend on the context. Both are quite popular (although flimsi declined in use through the time that the Empire was in charge), but if your character isn’t getting it back then I would say a flimsi would be better than a datapad, especially if you don’t want a trace of the information. Flimsiplast dissolves, by the way. However, you could use a datacard for the other character to put in their own datapad instead of giving them an entire datapad, that would probably be much more common.

The plural of flimsi (referring to the sheet, not the material) is not mentioned as far as I know. I believe the word itself is never actually pluralized, so you might say “sheets of flimsi” rather trying something like “flimsis” which is kind of awkward.

Data storage is mostly digital, be it personal or on a government-wide level. Most people own a datapad because they’re pretty cheap, and datacards are very widely used. Plenty of people do still keep stuff around in a hard copy form, like flimsiplast journals, but most day-to-day things are done digitally. It’s basically a lot like how we store our data today.

Books as we know them are considered pretty archaic in Star Wars. When printed, books and other large compilations of data are done on flimsi, but these are rare. Holobooks are much more popular, and those are stored on thin crystalline boards or, if you don’t want to be so official, in the form of a file on a datapad.

Hope that helps!
