Coruscant hasn’t been mentioned yet in the new films, and perhaps sparingly in the supplemental material. Do you think it will again play a role? What is the temperament there now?

At the moment, I don’t really see them giving Coruscant any significant role in the new trilogy. It seems like they’re going to stay away from it for the most part, unless the Resistance makes some major military advances into the Core. At the moment, it isn’t really clear what’s happening on Coruscant, but we do know it joined the New Republic, so I would guess it has either already been conquered by the First Order or is a target. (Likely, the First Order already has some support on Coruscant, because around the end of the Galactic Civil War there was definitely still Imperial support on the world.) But I definitely could see them adding it into more of the extended material, if only to talk about what exactly is going on at the moment.

What would you say is a reasonable planetary army size (in terms of number of soldiers) for a planet with 1 billion inhabitants (plus a couple hundred million more citizens living off-world)?

I really couldn’t say, I’m afraid. I haven’t been able to find any information on the actual number of soldiers in various planetary defence forces. As well, most information is focused on the defence fleet rather than the army. Most planets with such a small population have more of a police force than an army (some don’t even have a real fleet either). It would also really depend on the planet’s resources or political significance, especially if this is taking place during wartime. Sorry I couldn’t be more specific!

Do you think it’s better to research a planet or just make a new one up? I’m trying to find one that is human-inhabited but that might be in the midst of a civil war because of loyalty to the First Order/Empire nostalgia. Perhaps a mining community or one important in trade and supplies?

I personally prefer to pick an existing planet when possible, partially because I like to stick to canon and partially because I’m too lazy to make one up, but I wouldn’t say one is better than the other. There isn’t a whole lot of information available about the politics and astrography of the First Order, and I’m afraid I don’t know of any such planet, so you may want to just make this one up.

*another minor spoiler* at the end of Luke’s storyline he sees the twin suns again. I believe I read in the visual dictionary that the planet did have twin suns. What is the likelihood of that given it was ocean-covered? Even at a distance twin suns would affect I would imagine?

Going off of real life, it’s not likely. Planets in binary systems often have pretty elliptical orbits, meaning they can move in and out of the habitable zone, alternately freezing and thawing throughout the year. For life to even exist, the suns should either be so close to each other that the planet experiences a gravitational pull as if there were only one star, or they should have roughly equal masses. For the planet to be covered in water like Ahch-To, it would have to have a fairly large orbital radius, and if we assume that its climate stays pretty much the same, its orbit would also have to be quite circular. But who knows, it could be possible!

Would you happen to know of any species (preferably near-human or humanoid ones) whose planets were either allied with the Empire against their will or outright conquered by the Empire? Basically, I’m making an Inquisitor with an “I had no choice but to join them” type of sob story, and I need a species that comes with that.

Well, you’ll be pleased to know that you have many to choose from. Not to mention, after Order 66 many new Inquisitors were former Jedi who chose to join the Empire rather than be killed, so they could really be any species at all. But if you need extra incentive, or perhaps your character is one of the Force-sensitive children that the Empire went after, here are some planets of origin to chose from, along with the date they were conquered/annexed/forced to join (if known) and the native or majority species if there is one:

Jelucan (11 BBY, assorted species), Kashyyyk (19 BBY, Wookiee), Hargeeva (7 BBY, Human), Garqi (Human), Ando (Aqualish), Caamas (technically joined willingly but was heavily bombarded in 19 BBY as punishment, Caamasi), Ryloth (Twi’lek), Utapau (19 BBY, Utai and Pau’an), Yaga Minor (after 19 BBY, Yagai).

Hopefully one of those works for you!

Hi! Would you happen to know of a planet that has a mostly cold and icy climate (like Hoth, Orto-Plutonia, etc.), but also has at least a few urban settlements on it, too? Like, something that’s still very much an ice world, but isn’t a totally empty wasteland either?

(Ice Planet Anon again) OH, I forgot to mention, I’d preferably like to find something that’s populated at least in part by humans, since those are the stars of the story I’m working on. Thanks a bunch!

The first planet that comes to mind is Arkania, an ice planet with a number of enclosed cities. It’s not really inhabited by Humans, but Arkanians are humanoids and there are plenty of off-world visitors, due to it being a planet with massive stores of diamonds. Along the same lines is Mygeeto, though depending on the time period you’re writing in and who your characters are, this may not work.

Some worlds with more humans include Rhen Var, Ando Prime, Nar Hekka, Dolomar (whose cities are all underground), Anteevy (pretty much just an Imperial mining planet), Krownest, and Belsavis. There’s a good variety of planets there, so I hope something works for you!

Everything You (N)ever Wanted to Know about Coruscant.

muldertorture:

A Semi-Comprehensive Guide to the Galatic Center, circa the Fall of the Republic Era for Inter-galactic Tourists and Fic Writers Alike.

(For those who don’t have the patience or feel too overwhelmed to browse Wookiepedia, this is for you!) Originally created as a resource for @the-far-bright-center

Welcome to Coruscant! Originally called Notron, also known as Imperial
Center or the Queen of the Core, was a planet located in the Galactic
Core.  Over the centuries, Coruscant had
developed into an ecumenopolis, (a type of planet, or in some cases a moon,
whose entire surface was covered with a single worldwide city) with a total of
5,127 levels of city built up from the crust by the time of the Clone Wars. The
actual planet-wide metropolis of Coruscant was called Galactic City. Under the
Galactic Republic, the names Republic City or the City of Spires were also used
to reference the city. However, in practice, Galactic City and its other names
were sometimes applied to the Senate District, the central government center
and de facto capital of Coruscant.

Do you know of any planets/species that have cultures/architecture with a solarpunk aesthetic? Or, if there are none, do you know of any species whose culture could feasibly work with that?

Sorry this took so long, I was at the midnight showing of The Last Jedi! As for your question, I’m a little bit stuck. Probably the closest thing I can think of that fits the aesthetic, visually and explicitly, would be Mandalore. And I say closest because the scenery we’ve seen of the domed cities doesn’t actually have a whole lot of plants.

I’m not sure exactly what you’re looking for in terms of a culture that could work with your ideas, but I would look into the Chandrilans. Chandrila is primarily an agriworld, and the people who live there are educated very early in how to coexist with nature and maintain a balanced ecosystem. They do also have advanced architecture and tend towards smooth, elegant buildings, which helps it fit better with the aesthetic, but we don’t see a whole lot of the landscape or cities so I couldn’t tell you for sure.

I hope that helps a bit with what you’re looking for, and if anyone else has suggestions feel free to add!

Part of Fifteen: Further Research and Resources

AKA What Pear Read To Write This Series

I read a lot of stuff in preparation for writing this series of posts. Researching and writing each post usually took about 3-5 hours. Here’s most of what I read and watched, though admittedly not all of it, and yes, I did go out and read some very basic, elementary-school-level things sometimes to make sure I wasn’t misremembering things or misrepresenting them.

My biggest suggestion is: When in doubt, go to Youtuber Artifexian. He goes through all the math and how it’s related to what, and even has conlang and calendar creation videos. You’ll see him pop up a lot on these lists.

For hard sci-fi writers looking for all the math equations, go through the video descriptions for the Artifexian videos linked below. He explains what each equation means and why you should bother with it.
