Can you hazard a guess at how many Alderaanians might have survived the destruction of the planet? I read somewhere that Alderaan had a population of about 2 billion (not sure if that’s accurate), and I’m struggling to come up with a realistic number for how many might’ve been offworld at the time (working or studying on other planets, moved to their partner’s homeworld, vacationing on another planet, etc). Tens or hundreds of thousands? Maybe even a few million? Thanks for your help!

According to Coruscant and the Core Worlds, about 60,000 Alderaanian citizens were offworld at the time of Alderaan’s destruction. The same book, as well as a few others, cite Alderaan’s population before 0 BBY as 2 billion, so yes that is accurate. This is the estimate I have used personally, but if anyone knows of others feel free to add!

I hope that helps!

Random Planet Generator

Hey guys! Recently I’ve gotten a few asks wondering about canonical planets with little or no background, ones that could be used for anything, or planets with a very specific placement and history. I usually suggest that it might be best to create a new one, but I know firsthand how easy it is to get stuck on even the most basic aspects of worldbuilding. Hence, this!

This is a random generator that will create for you the basis of an original planet: a name, a region of space, prominent surface features, possible imports and exports, rotation period, gravitational pull, and atmosphere type. You can pick out the information you want, mix it up as needed and go from there. As always, any suggestions are welcome. I hope you guys get some use out of this!

(P.S. All of the names created by the generator are completely random, and occasionally it will spit out a real word or the name of a canonical planet. Check to make sure the name isn’t already taken!)

after the Empire’s surrender, the Galactic Concordance required the Empire/any Imperial vessels to stay within certain boundaries in the Core and Inner Rim. can you hazard a guess as to what those boundaries might be, or which planets might fall within them? I can invent a few worlds, but I wonder if any canon worlds might work for my fic. thanks for your time!

I’ve sketched out some very rough possible borders for you, but this is totally open to interpretation and I did not take the time to go through every possible planet. I have brief explanations for the planets I did mark out on the map, and those are under the cut because it got a bit long. These borders would essentially represent the biggest likely area that the Imperial Remnant was required to stay within.

Since the screenshot doesn’t have every planet labelled, here’s a map to help you interpret it. New Republic planets are the green dots, Imperial ones are the red.

For the innermost boundaries, we know that Coruscant and Hosnian Prime canonically fall within the New Republic’s borders. It’s a bit hard to make guesses as to the rest of the border, but Corellia, Alderaan, Chandrila, Ganthel, and Velusia are also New Republic worlds or have worked closely with the New Republic and historically did not support the Empire, so the Empire’s territory likely avoids these systems. While Kuat was later represented in the New Republic’s Senate, at the time of the Concordance it was likely still considered an Imperial world. Fondor was taken by the New Republic shortly before the Battle of Jakku. Kalist has little information in canon, but it seems to have remained under Imperial control for at least a while, since they had a penal colony on the world. Byss belonged to the Imperial Remnant in Legends, so I’ve gone off of that as well. Questal was likely still an Imperial world. Carida may have been New Republic, because the Empire was forced to abandon their Academies. I’m guessing that Vulpter would belong to the New Republic due to its involvement with the Trade Federation. Xa Fel was lost to the New Republic at some point, so I’ve included it within their territory. Giju and Ghorman joined the New Republic in Legends. Kiffu, Ojom, and Byss were Imperial worlds in Legends.

As for the Inner Rim boundaries, we know that Jakku belonged to the Imperial Remnant. Jedha may have joined the NR after the Galactic Civil War. Yag’Dhul, Atzerri, Kooriva, Taanab, Champala, Shili and Bogden joined the NR in Legends. Denon and Exodeen were likely still Imperial at the time. Manaan’s alliance is unclear at this time, but since it is near the edge of the Inner Rim and has valuable resources I believe the NR would want it for itself. I’ve given Onderon to the NR because of its sympathies with the Rebel Alliance. Obroa-skai, Corsin and Bilbringi still belonged to the Empire in Legends.

Again, these are rough and open to interpretation, and keep in mind that the New Republic was supposedly not prohibited from entering the Empire’s borders. But I hope that helps a bit!

Hi there! Thank you so much for running this blog! Could you recommend me any planets that are somewhat similar to earth in design, but has little to no history or information on it canon-wise?

I’m going to point you to this category intersection on Wookieepedia of planet stubs and terrestrial planets. It’ll give you a bunch of short articles on planets that have a good chance of being somewhat Earth-like. Obviously there are a ton of options, but with so little information on each planet and without knowing what you intend to do with it, it’s a bit hard to recommend any in particular. It may also be helpful to search through the planets tag on this blog.

If it’s not so important that the planet actually exists in canon, you may prefer to design one yourself. (By coincidence, I’m working on a random planet generator for this blog right now, but as I’m still trying to get all the code to cooperate I can link you to the stuff I usually use instead.) Here’s the planet name generator I default to (note that the names often benefit from a bit of modification), here’s a map to help you place the planet, approximate travel times between territories, and of course Wookieepedia for inspiration.

I hope that helps!

Hello! I’m writing a personal SW story and was wondering if there are other neutral or shady resort worlds (preferably in the Outer Rims but I’m flexible!) like the one Canto Bight was on? Lavish or scummy will work! Also any mining planets that the Empire may have taken over, or heavily populated but poor areas that produce something of value? Thank you!

Right, sorry this took so long! I had to do some digging for this one. For resort worlds, I was pretty loose with the definition, but if they aren’t exactly resorts then they are certainly shady and have plenty of places for gambling and criminal activities. As well, there will be places on many planets where high-class criminals do business (some places on Coruscant, for example, would work very well) but these worlds are just better known for it:

Cloud City (Bespin), Keyorin, Llanic, Nar Shadda, Ord Mantell, Pembric II, Kerev Doi, Corellia (certain places, such as Treasure Ship Row), Mon Gazza, Ord Antalaha, the Lol sector and specifically Kendamar, and Pavo Prime

As for Imperial mining worlds, a whole lot of planets with significant resources were taken over during the Imperial era, so if you’d like to look through the mining planets category you will find quite a few that work. This link specifically will take you to the category intersection for Imperial worlds and mining planets, for a more specific but less comprehensive list.

Generally, you won’t find heavily populated planets that are considered poor overall, especially if they have valuable resources. The planet itself will be quite rich, but the wealth will usually be highly concentrated among the corporations that own the resources, which in most cases are metals, minerals, and tourist destinations. Try looking through the ecumenopoleis; most of them will be very densely populated, and will have some large source of revenue that allowed them to get that way, which means they will have very poor areas as well. Coruscant and Empress Teta would be good examples.

I hope some of those work for you!

How was Coruscant protected at the height of the empires power? How would palpatine ensure that the stationed fleet can’t turn against him?

Coruscant was guarded by the First Army, a powerful reserve fleet put in place during the Clone Wars. The rest of the Core Worlds surrounding the Coruscant Sector were also protected by their own sector armies, numbered two through seven, making it very difficult for enemy operatives to fly or land in the area without detection. Coruscant also had the benefit of a very big on-world security force and a large population of rich humans to support Palpatine.

I doubt that Palpatine ever really believed the First Army would turn against him. The Imperial sector armies were commanded by Grand Moffs, all of whom were pretty close confidants of the Emperor, relatively speaking. They would have been unlikely to betray him, and their subordinate officers were generally either truly loyal to the Empire or scared of defecting. In addition, it was a huge fleet; there’s no way the entire force would defect together, and a few ships wouldn’t be able to do much of anything.

I hope that helps!

Are there any records of planets and/or collections of planets (e.g. the Corellian sector) having flags to represent themselves? Or was it more common to just have a symbol or crest of some kind, like the Imperial Cog?

Hey, sorry for the wait! I got very busy very suddenly with my IB exams (which are thankfully over now). There are a few planets known to have their own flags or other symbols (the planet Hok has a flag, for example, and Pantora has an emblem), but it’s much more common for factions (like the Republic, the Alliance, Black Sun, the Pyke Syndicate, House Organa etc.) to have them. Most planets don’t have an official symbol of any sort, and I can’t recall any systems or sectors that do, however many have certain certain objects or symbols tied to them, like the Mandalorian jaig eyes.

I hope that helps!

Do you know of any planets that might have giant, dinosaur-sized megafauna?

Numerous planets have one or more species of animal (native or immigrated) that can get very big, but I don’t know of any where that’s a defining characteristic of the lifeforms there. Like Earth, most planets have megafauna as well as smaller species, and many have ones that are dinosaur-sized (although I suppose it depends on which dinosaur…)

One of the best examples might be Tatooine, with a number of massive species such as banthas, dewbacks, rontos, sarlaccs, rancors (rare on Tatooine) and krayt dragons. You will also find large animals on pretty much any jungle world; Dagobah has giant swamp slugs and dragonsnakes, Endor has gorax and boar-wolves, Yavin 4 has runyips. Also worth noting would be Bespin, home to absolutely huge animals such as the beldon (which can grow up to 10km in diameter) and the velker, and Naboo, with giant aquatic animals as well as mammals such as falumpasets and fambaas. Basically, you’re likely to find something big on just about any planet.

I hope one of those works!

Hello! Are there any good sources for population/demography stats for Lothal during the Thrawn novel and Rebels? Population size, percent of population by species and gender, etc. Wookiepedia is less helpful here than I’d hoped. :(

I’m sorry, I can’t find a source for that information. Statistics like that

generally aren’t published, it’s usually just a straight population count and a list of species inhabiting the world. However, I know there are guidebooks that have come out recently, so if anyone owns one and happens to know the answer feel free to add!
