While I was researching Devaronians (y’know, like I always am), I noticed the Wookieepedia article on the Devaronese language is pretty sparse—so sparse, in fact, that it doesn’t actually contain any Devaronese words. SO, despite me being less than a linguist, I decided to try and come up with some of my own!
Basically, I extrapolated what I could from what few Devaronese words we know (all of which are italicized on the list itself, just for reference), while with others I and Nick (@of-stardust-and-wanderlust) gave meanings to our OCs’ names—the rest I basically just pulled out of my ass derived from the other words. This is of course an ongoing, ever-expanding list, and I’d be happy to add more to it if anyone has any ideas!
For now though, feel free to read through this, leave comments about what you find interesting, bash me for my misunderstanding of how languages work, or anything else! I’d love to hear your guys’ feedback on this 😀
Reblogging cuz I (and some pals in the Devaron’s Angels group chat) made some additions to the dictionary 😀
There’s no reason it couldn’t work at least decently, given the basic functions of the mask and goggles Kel Dor normally wear offworld. The suit would have to be completely airtight and filled with the composite gases of Dorin’s atmosphere, including helium. There would have to be some sort of amplifier inside the suit, because otherwise the Kel Dor would be forced to shout to be heard. The issue would then be that a suit of this nature would likely be pretty bulky and heavy. If the air is going to be contained inside a suit rather than a mask, then every part of the body has to remain covered at all times, which means no touchscreens or fingerprint scans, and likely very little fine motor control. Practically, it definitely would not make more sense than the standard mask and goggles, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Perhaps the suit was chosen over the mask for a specific reason, like cost or a disability?
The trilogy is complete!!! Just in time for Christmas and the release of The Last Jedi, here’s “What Species To Choose for your Star Wars OC”, Volume 3! Have you ever wanted to make a character in the Star Wars universe, but you can’t decide which of the fifty billion alien races to use for them? Well, here’s this handy flowchart to help make that decision just a little easier!
For this version, I decided I wanted to suffer as I made it, so I went ahead and bumped up the species count from 150 to 250, which is somehow still only scratching the surface of the species out there. Even so, I’m happy to say I’ve at least covered most of the major species, while still sprinkling in some more obscure ones—everything from Twi’leks and Zabraks to Hysalrians and Drabatans, this flowchart has it all!
Beyond that (as well as some minor formatting changes), everything’s just as it was before! You can pick out your species either by following the flowchart or by picking randomly with a six-sided die or a random number generator—figured the latter would be cool for all the RPG players out there! Once you find one you like, feel free to check out the links below for lists of resources and info on each species (alphabetized, of course, for your convenience). These resources can include their Wookieepedia page, videos of the species in-action, informational videos, and even name generators! Do be warned, though, that the amount of info on the species vary, as some are just older and more well known/established than others. I hope what I found helps anyway, though!
But yeah, in any case, I really hope this helps some people out! In fact, if you do end up using this, please consider tagging whatever you make with #starwarsocflowchart—you don’t have to, of course, but I’d just love to see what people come up with!
With that said, merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone reading this, and thank you all for supporting my work on here enough to inspire me to do this! Y’all are the best, and I can’t wait to see all that you make with this!
Sure! Togrutas are my fav SW species, I’ll see if I can do them any justice here! I can already tell this one will be very long so i apologize in advance lol
I’ll be paraphrasing from there for most anatomy references.
Togrutas are a carnivorous species with a tribal/pack nature. Though it’s seldom shown, it’s mentioned on the wiki that Togrutas actually have sharp canine teeth! Togrutas are distinguished by their varying face/skin patterns, their 3-4 head tails (or Lekku) and their montrals, the hollow horn-like growths on top of their head. Their montrals give them passive echolocation. Their Lekku and Montrals can drastically vary in shape from person to person, and their skin and eye colors can be just about any color of the rainbow.
Their head tails and monrtals can be grown in sections, like shown:
Or they can be one continuous growth:
Adult Male Togrutas have been shown to sometimes have shorter Lekku than females-
but not all of them adhere to this. Male’s Lekku can be just as long as a Females and can pretty much be the same shape-
And here’s my fav Male Togruta, Zandar! (character by my friend XombieJunky on deviantart, please go check out his work!) He’s a prime example of Fantastic Togruta, I love him
Togruta montrals and lekku get longer as they grow older, and the pattern can shift and change with time, as well as their face markings shifting in shape-
I’ve exercised this pattern shift with my OC Stitch, you can see how their montrals/lekku grew over time as well-
And here’s some more examples of Togruta younglings-
Most examples of Togruta shown have white as a prominent color on their montrals and face, but it’s not necessary to have that (as seen with that pinkish-purple guy shown earlier on this post). With my OC Tulu, I tried to go for a watermelon-like color scheme, she has no white markings-
A cool way to figure out color schemes for a Togruta could be by using a pallet generator, here’s one of my fav generators if you want to use it!
On my final point, I’ll be talking about Togruta headdress. Here’s an excerpt from the wiki on that-
“
As hunters, the Togruta showed off the pelts and teeth of their game as a sign of pride and maturation. Special pride was taken in the teeth of akul that a Togruta had taken down as an individual. These teeth often were made into jewelry such as an akul-tooth headdress or a necklace, which also incorporated metals, stones, and pearls found on Shili.“
The headdress is mentioned to be made with teeth, but that’s not always necessary. Here’s some headdress examples-
Headdresses are a cultural thing for them and can be fun to design, but it’s not a requirement. Many go without the headdress, it’s up to you!
I believe that should be all the basics of Togruta design. If you need further content, google image search “Togruta” and/or read the wiki for inspiration. Hope this helped at all, and have fun making your Togrutas!
Answer the first question, then follow the number at the end of your selection to your next question; keep doing that, until you get a species. For more information on a given species, check the original post for links, or just search Wookieepedia.
0. Alright, first question: How Human do you want your OC to be?
Almost entirely human, save for some minor differences with their biology or appearance; I don’t want to get too crazy with this, after all! (1)
Mostly human, but with some other features being prevalent; something with a human face, but distinctly alien (2)
Somewhat human, but with an alien face, features, and anatomy – like an alien with human proportions (3)
Only human as far as their humanoid body shape (head, arms, and legs on a central torso) ; something almost entirely alien (4)
I want something weird and crazy, with hardly any human features – humans are overrated, anyways (5)
After how popular the first iteration of this flowchart got (thank you all so much for that, by the way, it’s really awesome that it helped so many people out), I was inspired to create a second volume, with even more species and resources than the first. Well, after a month or so of work, it’s finally here! Just in time for the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope, here’s “What Species To Choose For Your Star Wars OC: Volume 2″!
For this new version, I upped the ante with everything. I went from including 75 species to a whopping 150 (which is still only scratching the surface of the full list, I’m afraid), and I tried my best to include more species from “The Clone Wars”, “The Force Awakens”, and “Rogue One” as well. Not only that, but down below I’ve included more resources as well: in addition to each species’ Wookieepedia articles, I’ve provided (where available) videos of the species in action, informational videos, and name generators, all to give you as much info as possible for your OC. Furthermore, among some other minor formatting tweaks, I’ve also added the option to choose answers via dice rolls (thanks to @empress-only-in-name for that idea), for anyone who would prefer a more random choice in species. Finally, I think it’s also worth mentioning that the wonderful @pomrania re-created the flowchart in a text-based format here, if you’d like to check that out.
Let me know what you all think of the new version! I tried my best to take into account everyone’s requests and suggestions, so hopefully it all worked out to your liking! Do let me know if there’s anything I can add or change, though; it will be a while before I make a Volume 3, if ever, but I’d be happy to tweak this version if it helps. Also, if you end up using this to make a character, please consider either tagging me or using #StarWarsOCFlowchart so I can see it; I don’t care about getting credit or anything, I just want to see what you guys come up with!
But yeah, I think that’s all I have to mention! I hope this helps some people out!
I’ve heard from a lot of people that, when making a Star Wars OC, they get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of species and they have trouble choosing just one. So, at 3am about a week ago, I had the idea to put together a flowchart to help make that decision easier! I picked out 75 different species, both the well-known and the more obscure from both canon and legends, and grouped them by everything from the shape of their horns to the number of arms they have. I tried my best to have it be coherent and make sense, so hopefully there’s some use for it!
Links to info and (for some) videos showing off the species are below the cut. Some species have less than others to go off of, so I apologize in advance if I can’t find much. Hope this helps, though! 😀
Since deciding species for Star Wars OCs is stupid hard (there’s just way to many to choose from), I made this to help narrow down some options! It’s not really fanart—or even very artsy, for that matter—but maybe someone will get some use out of it nonetheless! 😀
