Does the GFFA have some approximation of the Geneva Convention? Has it ever had anything along those lines in galactic history? I haven’t been able to find any reference to it, nor to any mention of war crime laws aside from “The Old Republic outlawed war crimes,” which is pretty vague. Thanks!

Hey, sorry for the wait! I was away with no internet. Wartime provisions were covered under the Galactic Constitution, the Galactic Republic’s founding document, as was the Rights of Sentience clause, so it can be assumed that laws relating to civilians and other non-combatants were located in a similar document. The laws do exist, as people have been charged for war crimes under the Republic, but beyond that I cannot find any reference to a Republic document that outlines those laws. As the Imperial Charter is based on the Galactic Constitution, it is possible that those laws remained – likely with modification, as occurred with the Rights of Sentience and many acts surrounding the military and law enforcement. Likewise, I can’t find specifics for the New Republic in canon or legends.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help!

Has there ever been anything like a white phosphorous grenade in Star Wars? I feel like the Empire would have something like it but I cannot find anything.

Well if you’re thinking of the smoke-producing abilities in particular, then yes smoke grenades exist and are called such in the Star Wars universe. These smoke grenades don’t normally seem to be lethal, however, and don’t have the same toxic effects as phosphorous. A gas grenade can be filled with many different chemicals, presumably including white phosphorous if you like. I don’t know of any chemical-based grenades that a) produce deadly smoke and b) throw off chemicals that can burn so deep into tissue, so you may want to take a look at chemical load grenades as a middle ground.

I hope that helps!

This is kind of random, but do you know why the Empire tends to handcuff people in front whereas other baddies like Jabba cuff in back?

I have no idea actually! I haven’t thought of this before! I’m afraid I can’t find reference of it anywhere, but if I had to take a guess I might say it’s because cuffing a person’s hands in front makes it easier for them to attack someone or escape, and a whole lot of on-screen escapes are from Imperial officers, thus making it easier for our heroes. If anyone has a more informed answer please feel free to add on!

Do you know of any reference books that have detailed blueprints/cross-sections/images of the Executor? I’ve got a ton of reference books, but only one has any real detail on the Executor and it’s just the command tower (The Complete Locations, pre-TFA version). I’ve seen articles that mention blueprints for the ship, but I haven’t been able to track down where those might be found. Any help is appreciated!

I’m sorry, I’ve taken a look through my reference books and I’m running into the same problem. I don’t know of any detailed blueprints – perhaps because the ship is just so big, it would be very difficult to create a true blueprint for the entire thing. The most detailed image I could find is this, which I expect you’ve probably already found (from The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels):

If anyone else would be willing to take a look in their books the help would be greatly appreciated!

Six Imperial Departments to Flesh Out Your Fics

jedimordsith:

Or, if you’re like me, create plot bunnies…

Imperial Department for Epidemic Prevention seems fairly self-explanatory. But I challenge anyone with even a passing familiarity with human history to imagine the kinds of things they did “for the public’s protection”…

Imperial Department of Military Research handled “research and development of military technology such as equipment, small arms, facility components, and armed starships.”

Imperial Department of Redesign was a particularly horrifying “elite, highly secretive corps of the Galactic Empire, tasked with subduing or liquidating troublesome non-Human species.”

Imperial Procurement was an “organizational branch” of the Empire responsible for finding and collecting resources… I’m pretty sure nobody needs to be told that they didn’t feel obligated to abide by Fair Trade standards or concern themselves much with the impact on those doing the producing.

Department of Punishment tortured captured criminals. Fun fact: it had a habit of forcing prisoners to sign contracts giving their captors permission to torture them to death.

Imperial Xenodetic Survey Department Mapmakers! (And map alterers!) This is probably only going to appeal to geeks like me, but given the information control and strategic erasure of knowledge the Empire is known for, I feel like there’s potentially a lot one could play with here! It is, at very least, a fun tidbit to throw into character conversations whenever navigation comes up.

By chance, do you know if the Empire used anything similar to the separatists’ defoliator canon? If so, do you think this weapon would be effective in destroying a semi-primitive city of mostly wooden buildings, or do you think the Empire employ something like a squadron of flametroopers to do the job?

I don’t know of any weapon resembling a defoliator that was used by the Empire. Flametroopers (called incinerator stormtroopers in Legends) would definitely be a viable alternative, and have been known to take on this role.

Hope that helps!

after the Empire’s surrender, the Galactic Concordance required the Empire/any Imperial vessels to stay within certain boundaries in the Core and Inner Rim. can you hazard a guess as to what those boundaries might be, or which planets might fall within them? I can invent a few worlds, but I wonder if any canon worlds might work for my fic. thanks for your time!

I’ve sketched out some very rough possible borders for you, but this is totally open to interpretation and I did not take the time to go through every possible planet. I have brief explanations for the planets I did mark out on the map, and those are under the cut because it got a bit long. These borders would essentially represent the biggest likely area that the Imperial Remnant was required to stay within.

image

Since the screenshot doesn’t have every planet labelled, here’s a map to help you interpret it. New Republic planets are the green dots, Imperial ones are the red.

For the innermost boundaries, we know that Coruscant and Hosnian Prime canonically fall within the New Republic’s borders. It’s a bit hard to make guesses as to the rest of the border, but Corellia, Alderaan, Chandrila, Ganthel, and Velusia are also New Republic worlds or have worked closely with the New Republic and historically did not support the Empire, so the Empire’s territory likely avoids these systems. While Kuat was later represented in the New Republic’s Senate, at the time of the Concordance it was likely still considered an Imperial world. Fondor was taken by the New Republic shortly before the Battle of Jakku. Kalist has little information in canon, but it seems to have remained under Imperial control for at least a while, since they had a penal colony on the world. Byss belonged to the Imperial Remnant in Legends, so I’ve gone off of that as well. Questal was likely still an Imperial world. Carida may have been New Republic, because the Empire was forced to abandon their Academies. I’m guessing that Vulpter would belong to the New Republic due to its involvement with the Trade Federation. Xa Fel was lost to the New Republic at some point, so I’ve included it within their territory. Giju and Ghorman joined the New Republic in Legends. Kiffu, Ojom, and Byss were Imperial worlds in Legends.

As for the Inner Rim boundaries, we know that Jakku belonged to the Imperial Remnant. Jedha may have joined the NR after the Galactic Civil War. Yag’Dhul, Atzerri, Kooriva, Taanab, Champala, Shili and Bogden joined the NR in Legends. Denon and Exodeen were likely still Imperial at the time. Manaan’s alliance is unclear at this time, but since it is near the edge of the Inner Rim and has valuable resources I believe the NR would want it for itself. I’ve given Onderon to the NR because of its sympathies with the Rebel Alliance. Obroa-skai, Corsin and Bilbringi still belonged to the Empire in Legends.

Again, these are rough and open to interpretation, and keep in mind that the New Republic was supposedly not prohibited from entering the Empire’s borders. But I hope that helps a bit!

Hello! I’m writing a personal SW story and was wondering if there are other neutral or shady resort worlds (preferably in the Outer Rims but I’m flexible!) like the one Canto Bight was on? Lavish or scummy will work! Also any mining planets that the Empire may have taken over, or heavily populated but poor areas that produce something of value? Thank you!

Right, sorry this took so long! I had to do some digging for this one. For resort worlds, I was pretty loose with the definition, but if they aren’t exactly resorts then they are certainly shady and have plenty of places for gambling and criminal activities. As well, there will be places on many planets where high-class criminals do business (some places on Coruscant, for example, would work very well) but these worlds are just better known for it:

Cloud City (Bespin), Keyorin, Llanic, Nar Shadda, Ord Mantell, Pembric II, Kerev Doi, Corellia (certain places, such as Treasure Ship Row), Mon Gazza, Ord Antalaha, the Lol sector and specifically Kendamar, and Pavo Prime

As for Imperial mining worlds, a whole lot of planets with significant resources were taken over during the Imperial era, so if you’d like to look through the mining planets category you will find quite a few that work. This link specifically will take you to the category intersection for Imperial worlds and mining planets, for a more specific but less comprehensive list.

Generally, you won’t find heavily populated planets that are considered poor overall, especially if they have valuable resources. The planet itself will be quite rich, but the wealth will usually be highly concentrated among the corporations that own the resources, which in most cases are metals, minerals, and tourist destinations. Try looking through the ecumenopoleis; most of them will be very densely populated, and will have some large source of revenue that allowed them to get that way, which means they will have very poor areas as well. Coruscant and Empress Teta would be good examples.

I hope some of those work for you!

Do you have an example for a very very unpopular job onboard a Star Destroyer, ideally something that is also dangerous (as in life threatening) but it would also do if it’s just a ‘lowly’ task. TIA so much

trooperst-3v3:

phasma-first-order:

writebetterstarwars:

I’m sorry, nothing like that is coming to mind. The issue would be that most of the dangerous jobs and some of the menial ones were done by droids rather than crew members. The closest thing I can think of would be sanitation duty, which probably isn’t all that dangerous but would likely be considered lowly and unpopular.

If anyone else can think of an example, please add on!

~ Jacen

@trooperst-3v3, provide some examples for this anon.

The worst job would probably be the time M4-RT1N’s crew had to clean the toilets after the Space Sushi Incident.

The most dangerous would probably be trying to dispose of the bodies that litter the bottoms of our many gaping chasms that sit below railing-less bridges and trying to work fast enough so you don’t get hit by falling objects. Or maybe trying to sober up the Knights of Ren after one of their alcohol-soaked board game nights. One of the two.

Here you go, anon, maybe these would work!
