What do you think of news of the new Star Wars: Resistance title being copyrighted?

I actually hadn’t heard of this until now! For those who don’t know, Lucasfilm has filed a number of trademarks on the title Star Wars: Resistance, including ones for a lot of merchandise, and people are speculating that this might be a new animated TV series set in the sequel era. Now that Rebels is coming to a close, I would certainly look forward to a new series, especially one with such potential to explore a whole new area of worldbuilding of which we haven’t seen too much yet. And since there are also the rumours that they’re currently looking for people who worked on Rebels and Clone Wars to do something new, I trust that if it ends up being a TV show it will be done well.

How were former separatists and separatist-aligned planets treated by the New Republic? Like, were they accepted with open arms, or did tensions still run high all those years later? On the flipside, how did old separatists feel about the New Republic?

There isn’t a ton of information on this subject. Under the Empire, Separatist and ex-Separatist planets were treated harshly as punishment for going against the Republic, even years after its fall. By around 0 BBY, it seems that Separatist factions were pretty much nonexistent, due to the subjugation of Separatist worlds and the fact that planets were often threatened with mass killings if they didn’t hand over their Separatist citizens. In some instances, ex-Separatist worlds provided support to the Rebellion in retaliation for their treatment by the Empire.

Following the Battle of Jakku we know that Chancellor Mothma was having to deal with the New Separatist Union during negotiations; to satisfy some of their concerns, it was agreed that the capital of the New Republic would not be on Coruscant but would rotate between several worlds. So, as it would appear, there were still tensions between the New Republic and the remaining Separatists, but the New Republic were willing to cooperate with any world who wanted to join them. Being former-Separatist might even be an advantage, if that world then aided the Rebellion in taking down the Empire. As for how the remaining Separatists felt about the New Republic, we really have no information on that and I can only assume that it would vary for each individual.

Do you think using rocket boots (like Cad Bane’s) along with a jetpack (like the Mandalorians’) would make flight easier or more difficult? Like, would the extra rockets help maneuverability and/or speed, or would they just be more jets to keep track of?

Usually, having multiple sources of thrust that aren’t coordinated with each other is bad news. If the user managed to keep their body completely straight and still, I would imagine that the combination could give them extra speed. However, rocket boots are more maneuverable than jetpacks and much more unstable, so I think it’s more likely that they would end up interfering with the jetpack’s ability to maneuver and cause the user to go all over the place, because those rockets have the potential to point in any direction if the user can’t control them perfectly.

In the old republic would the Sith be more than two? Or would they just be two and have dark followers?

In both the Old Sith Empire and the resurrected Sith Empire there were many Sith Lords in existence at once, in a structure resembling the Jedi Order. The Rule of Two was only introduced after the New Sith Wars, somewhere around 1000 BBY, and up until the time of the Galactic Empire the Sith followed this rule, waiting for the chance to reinstate a version of the Sith Empire. There were, of course, other followers of the dark side who were not Sith. Darth Sidious also broke the Rule on two occasions, but generally it was followed during that 1000-year time period.

Is it ever stated why Mitialans (namely Bariss Offee and Luminara Unduli) cover their hair most of the time? If not, do you have any theories?

It’s never specifically addressed. However, fans have speculated that it may either serve a religious purpose, like many real-life hair coverings, or it may have something to do with the fact that they are Jedi. Very few Mirialans do cover their hair (Barriss and Luminara are some of the only ones we’ve seen), and since Mirial is a very religious society with a distinct caste system it could be that Mirialan Jedi are seen as a sort of priest to other Mirialans and thus may have special dress customs. Additionally, the coverings may be to protect or hide the extrasensory organs that Mirialans have on their heads, which would especially benefit Mirialan Jedi because of how noisy and crowded Coruscant is. (This may also explain why we see Barriss with her covering off in her quarters.)

What do you hope for the last episodes of Rebels?

Oh man, I don’t really know. I am irrationally hopeful that everyone will survive, but the episode titles and synopses we’ve seen would not seem to support that. I’d like to know exactly what happened to Ashoka, and I am excited to find out what they’re going to do with the Mortis arc. I also think it’d be neat to have Thrawn back, maybe to resolve the whole thing with Kallus. Really I just hope they wrap everything up in a way that does the series justice.

What’s your favorite phrases used in dialogue in star wars? Do you like to weave it in or do you feel like its overuse makes it too obvious for the average reader (aka takes them out of the scene because it seems forced?)

My favourite by far to use is “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” Actually I probably use it more than I should, it appears once in a lot of my stuff. (Next would probably be “That’s not how the Force works!”) I never aim to include any specific reference to canon dialogue, though, I’ll only write it in if it occurs to me in the moment that it would fit. I would say I am cautious about using that sort of thing, I think it’s easy for it to feel forced or unnatural and that can definitely detract from the flow of a story. And if I do include a phrase like that I’ll keep it to one per work, because otherwise I worry it’ll seem overused. When done properly though it’s a fun little nod to canon, I always like when they do that in the novels.

What did you think of the Solo trailer?

I wasn’t super excited for the Solo movie and I definitely have my problems with it, but I have to admit the trailer actually intrigued me. I’m glad they seem to be exploring Han’s time at the Imperial Academy, that was always an interesting part of his past in my opinion. I do hope they take the opportunity to address the Empire’s treatment of the Wookiees and Chewie’s life debt to Han. Overall I liked it, and I hope the movie comes through.
