It’s the snow planet anon again! I was just looking for a snowy planet the rebels might’ve been sent on a mission to post-Death Star destruction (so like a war zone? outer rim probably?). Thanks for the help!! :)

As in, after A New Hope or after Return of the Jedi? Either way, the world Dolomar could work. It isn’t canonically a war zone, per say, at those points in time, but there were resistance forces on the planet that forced the Empire out after the Battle of Endor so perhaps rebels could have been sent to help/recruit people. However, it’s located in the Core Worlds, so if you needed something further out that could be a problem.

You mentioned Fest earlier so I’m not sure if you’ve already ruled it out, but it was the site of a battle involving Rogue Squadron as well as rebel ground forces at some point (supposedly) before the Battle of Endor. It’s also in the Outer Rim Territories. Maybe that could work?

Khorm (Mid Rim) was a Republic world during the Clone Wars and a source of some valuable ores, so it could be plausible for the Alliance to send forces to capture the planet for its mines.

Mygeeto (Outer Rim) was canonically captured by the Rebels at some point during the war, with Darth Vader leading TIE forces to stop the uprising, so supposedly there was a battle at some point after the destruction of the first Death Star. After 4 ABY the planet was under New Republic control.

Hope that helps!

Do you happen to know of any planets close to Devaron that were either neutral towards/actively against the Republic/Empire during its reign?

What a coincidence, I’ve been researching the exact same thing! Unfortunately, the options are a bit limited.

Corellia is one world that’s relatively close to Devaron. Technically it was neutral during the early days of the Clone Wars, but did later supply the Republic with ships and weapons. It was pretty much self-governing during the reign of the Empire; while it was under Imperial jurisdiction and had a Moff assigned to it, the citizens were generally quite anti-Imperial.

Atzerri, much closer than Corellia, was neutral during the Clone Wars and later worked against the Empire. Nearby, the planet Kooriva was a planet aligned with the Corporate Alliance that joined the CIS and was eventually taken over by the Republic. It was then punished by the Empire for being involved with the Separatists.

Fondor was a shipyard world that was technically part of the CIS during the Clone Wars, but its population didn’t really support it and didn’t contribute much to the war effort. It was not particularly supportive of the Empire either, but was forced to do major work such as the ship Executor.

Thyferra was the location of a base for the Third Fleet of the Confederate Navy. While the planet was affiliated with the CIS, it appears that it was functionally neutral because the Republic was still able to acquire bacta through the Clone Wars. After the war, its two major bacta companies supplied the Empire’s bacta, though the Rebel Alliance also had a supplier on-world.

That’s about all the major/known planets that would fit. Hopefully one of these work for you!

Hey there, this blog is a lifesaver, thank you for running it! I was wondering if you knew any other canonically snowy planets other than Fest (well, Legends wise) or Hoth? (Doesn’t even have to be entirely snow/ice, maybe just has a winter season?)

You’ll be happy to know, anon, that you have 185 options! Here is the list of planets, both Legends and canon, that are classified as ice worlds.

Obviously that’s a lot to choose from. If you’d rather use a canon planet, you could try one of these (I’ve linked their Wookieepedia articles): Ando Prime, Orto Plutonia, Nelvaan, Rhen Var, Rinn, Toola, and Ilum. There is also Starkiller Base, but I figure that probably wouldn’t work for any characters outside the First Order. Beyond that, it may be hard to quickly break down that list any further.

Depending on your specific scenario, one of these many, many planets might work better than the others. If you’re looking for something more specific (like a smuggler’s haven, an unpopulated world, planets associated with the Republic or the Separatists or the Empire, etc.), feel free to send another ask and I can help you sort through that list.

I hope that helps at least a bit!

Hello! What do we know about poison in the Star Wars universe, other than that it exists? Any info on specific types? Wookieepedia is sparse on this.

There are several known types, but some only work on specific species. There are also some substances that are not poisons but can be used as such (some coolants and fuels are toxic to near-humans, many common foodstuffs are toxic to one species or another). I’ve picked some more common substances that could be/are used as poisons and organized them by type.

Venoms: Worrt venom, krayt dragon venom (used as a poison in powder form), chuba poison (causes strokes), Kodashi viper venom (found only on Dathomir; there are no known instances of it being harvested from the snakes), rock wart sting juice (used in powdered form), Quesh venom, Dozoisian Snark Venom (lethal to humans, used by mixing with liquids).

Biotoxins: Irksh poison (used by the Yuuzhan Vong), Sith poison (not lethal, but used to make the victim unable to resist the dark side of the Force), mycotoxin (made from cerulean slime mold).

Actual real poisons: Synox (colourless, odourless and tasteless), the unknown poison used in the assassination of Onaconda Farr, dioxis (the gas Nute Gunray used in TPM to try to kill Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon), KillTab (a method of execution), teccitin (used by the Empire before 0 BBY), toxical (extremely deadly and fast-acting), malkite themfar (a neurotoxin used by bounty hunters), suicide pills.

Things that aren’t really poisons: Cyanoxis D-587 (intended to kill conduit worms), Cyclone (intended as a stimulant, used during the Cold War), insecticides (intended for pests, deadly to insectoid species), silicartha (used on Tatooine to kill small pests), hydrogen cyanide (a gas that happens to be fatal to humanoids), coolants.

Keep in mind that some of these are only (as far as we know) used in specific eras or by specific people/groups. Feel free to ask for more information about a specific substance or type of substance, especially if you need a poison to act against a non-humanoid being.

I hope one of these works!

So blasters do cause impacts and blunt force like bullets do? I got in an argument once in a roleplay cause my character had gotten nicked and I said the blast broke there bone but they argued it would only burn. Also do bolts ricochet any?

Yes, they can. I would say a glancing blow would have little to no impact force, though, and would probably just cause a burn. I can’t recall an instance of any character getting shot and it breaking their bone, but I suppose it’s possible if they took a direct hit to a bone that isn’t shielded by a lot of muscle or is particularly fragile (like the collarbone). Blaster bolts can ricochet, though its unclear exactly which surfaces can reflect them, except, obviously, for the magnetically sealed walls of the trash compacter seen in ANH.

Hi, just wanted to say I love your blog and, I was wondering, what are torture devices called in Star Wars? Thanks!

Thank you! There are quite a few different kinds of torture devices in the Star Wars universe, so all lumped together they would simply be called torture devices (alternatively, torture technology). Probably the most common device specifically used for torture would be the torture droid, sometimes interchangeably referred to as an interrogation droid. There are a few different types, so I’ll direct you to the Wookieepedia page in case you’d like to look at them.

A lot of other torture methods involve things not really meant for torture. Several times throughout the prequels and The Clone Wars, electrostaves and other electricity-based weapons are used as impromptu torture devices. There are instances of vibroweapons, lightsabers and other bladed/cutting weapons being used. There are even Force techniques that can be used to cause a person extreme pain, physical damage, and a very nasty death. On the less gore-y side, there are also aa few technologies and drugs used to artificially induce pain, confusion, immobility or hallucinations. Here’s a list of a bunch of different torture technologies; the article on torture includes Force powers and devices not meant for torture (be warned, you may find some of these disturbing). Basically, if you need a specific device then you have a lot of options.

Hope that helps!

BLASTERS DO NOT SHOOT BULLETS OR OTHER PROJECTILES. THEY ARE LASER GUNS. They burn and cauterise. They don’t make giant bullet holes and they don’t run out of bullets. There ARE NO bullets.

@writebetterstarwars, please reblog. I just read my third fic of the day that mentioned Rebels shooting Imperials with bullets and one mentioned a through-and-through.

No problem! I’ve seen that a few times myself. Blasters indeed do not fire any solid projectile; they fire small amounts of energized gas called particle bolts or, more commonly, blaster bolts. A blaster contains a gas cartridge (which usually has enough gas for 500 shots) and a power pack (enough power for 100 shots). However, those amounts change according to the type of blaster and its power setting, as well as any modifications made.

I should also point out that they don’t actually fire lasers (lasers are coherent beams of light and are considered archaic) but are based on the same principles. They most often cause burn wounds but the bolts can also hit with physical force (like a bullet), explosive force, or both. This can cause bleeding and damage around the actual wound and, because there is mass involved, can supposedly go right through a person’s body and cause burn wounds upon entry and exit (we already know they can go through armour, so a body should work the same, assuming the bolt has enough power to do it).

Calling it a laser gun was a vast over simplification but kinda gets the point across. They can act like projectiles, sort of, but there’s no ammo magazine, and they don’t do the thing bullets do with a small entry and large exit, is what I meant. I should have been more clear on that but I’ve had a long day and after two hours in rush hour traffic (even on a Saturday), I was extra irritable.

Also, blasters can overheat and/or explode from overuse or tampering, but simply being in a firefight won’t automatically cause that to happen. I’ve seen that described multiple times, but blasters are *designed* for this kind of thing. Unless the blaster is absolute crap and cobbled together, twenty shots isn’t going to make the handle get hot enough to burn the protagonist’s hand.

Very true. Using a blaster as intended will almost never cause it to overheat to the point of destruction

Galactic Standard Time Measurement

  • 60 Seconds = 1 minute
  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
  • 24 hours = 1 day

Galactic Standard Calendar

  • 5 days = 1 week
  • 7 weeks = 1 month
  • 35 days = 1 month
  • 368 days = 1 year
  • 10 months + 3 Fete (Festival) weeks + 3 holidays = 1 year

Fete/Festival Weeks

  • New Year Fete Week = first five days of the new year (takes place before the first month)
  • Festival of Life =  five days between the sixth and seventh months. It was marked by parties, get-togethers, and gift-giving.
  • Festival of Stars =five days between the ninth and tenth months of the year that celebrates interstellar space travel. It was marked by vacations to other worlds most often.

Days of the Week

  • Primeday (first day of the week)
  • Centaxday (second day)
  • Taungsday (third day)
  • Zhellday (fourth day)
  • Benduday (fifth/last day of the week)

The Galactic Standard Calendar is based on the

luno-solar calendar of Coruscant (from before the official founding of the Empire). It is the ‘standard’ in both the Republic and the Empire for basic measurements. However, there are many, many variations for various species, planets, etc. This is just the ‘standard’ used; similar to measurements of weight, etc.

Basically, this is not the ‘only calendar’ but the one used most often by governments, the military, etc. to be the ‘standard’. I thought it might be useful for people writing or roleplaying in the Star Wars galaxies to have a rough idea.

NOTE: There is mention in some sources of a 12 month/368 day calendar, but it doesn’t mention length of weeks, months, etc. other than ‘30-31 days’ so basically seems to be a ‘real life calendar’. I’m not 100% sure which is considered ‘canon’ so I choose to list the one that was a bit more ‘different’ for fun.

There’s a calendar?! Whelp my fics are all wrong in terms of time now. Thank you for the extremely useful reference!

I have a notification that @bleububbletea tagged me in this, but it won’t let me actually view it for some reason. Thank you, this looks very useful!
